What is an alterable variable?

Although school reform is a complex problem warranting large-scale, systems-based solutions, individual teachers can make a tremendous difference in student learning by focusing on alterable variables. Alterable variables are factors that both impact student learning and can be controlled by teaching practices.

There are so many variables in a teacher’s day. Many of those we have little control over. This is a blog about making the most of the variables teachers can control – the alterable variables.  

By taking what is known about the application of cognitive science in teaching and learning, plus research on individual teaching strategies, and examining the practices of expert teachers we can choose the alterable variables that will have the most impact on student learning.
